Important Announcement from OKU Admin 07.21.26
07.21.26 - Important Information for OKU Parents/Guardians
Oklahoma Union Public Schools would like to announce a new change for the upcoming school year.
There will be a slight adjustment to school day schedules for the 2026 27 school year to comply with new state legislation requiring additional daily recess time for elementary students.
Under Senate Bill 1481, all students in kindergarten through fifth grade must receive at least 40 minutes of supervised, unstructured recess each school day, an increase from the previous 20 minutes requirement.
The law also prohibits recess from being withheld as a form of discipline.
To meet the new requirement while preserving valuable instructional time, OKU has adjusted school start and dismissal times at all sites for the upcoming school year.

Research consistently shows that regular opportunities for play and physical activity support student’s physical health, social-emotional development and academic success. By incorporating additional recess into the school day, OKU focuses on complying with state law while continuing to support student learning and the district's goals of improving reading and math achievement.
We feel that these minimal changes will have a positive impact on our students while minimizing the changes on family schedules, bus schedules, or extracurricular activities.
For more information, families are encouraged to contact their child’s school site.
Thank you for entrusting us with the most valuable asset, your children. We take that responsibility seriously, and we look forward to working together to ensure the best possible opportunity for THEM.
